We need as many people as possible at the Western Placer Unified School District (WPUSD) public hearing this Tuesday evening. WPUSD primarily serves Lincoln, CA. There are multiple reasons to participate in this meeting.
What flags will be allowed to be displayed in schools? A teacher hung a Black Lives Matter flag and Gay Pride flag over a classroom door. Some parents want to ask the school board to create a policy to only allow the US flag and the California flag in the school so that it can be voted on in a future meeting.
Parents may weigh in on an ethics class that has been proposed. An ethics class, also known as moral philosophy, explores the principles of right and wrong behavior. It examines concepts like good and evil, virtue and vice, and justice, offering a framework for ethical decision-making in various contexts.
People also want the school board to support a resolution against AB 495, titled the "Family Preparedness Plan Act of 2025," which allows anyone with an affidavit to pick up a child without the parents’ knowledge. Critics argue the bill undermines parental rights. Proponents contend the bill provides a vital tool for families facing crises, ensuring children's stability and continued access to education and healthcare. They also state it standardizes the recognition of caregiver authorization affidavits, reducing administrative hurdles.
Individuals who wish to provide a verbal public comment must do so in person while attending the meeting (verbal comments will be limited to those present at the Board meeting). Twenty minutes will be allocated for each subject: speakers will be allowed three (3) minutes to address the Board. Your written comments will be provided to the Board of Trustees and made part of the meeting record. Your request must contain your name, address and your phone number. No action will be taken on any item not appearing on the agenda. "Request to Address Board of Trustees" forms will be located at the entrance of the meeting and need to be filled out and given to the Superintendents Executive Assistant prior to the start of the meeting.
These local matters directly impact our families, and they also set the tone for national discourse. Make sure your voice is heard here where it has the greatest impact.
The meeting starts at 6:00 PM PDT, according to the WPUSD website, but you are encouraged to show up a bit early to make sure you are able to get in and have a good seat. The end time is an approximation.
