Trump thinks he can deputize local law enforcement to do his bidding. We’re building a movement to prove him wrong.
Join us on Monday, May 11 at 7:00 PM ET for a mass call where community leaders across the country will gather and touch base on how best to engage sheriffs directly, demand transparency, and push for policies that protect constitutional rights and immigrant communities.
Building on the success of the Talk to Your Sheriff campaign last year, we’ll also walk you step by step through how to talk to your local sheriff with our new toolkit and have ample time for questions and answers.
Sheriffs nationwide are being pushed into cooperating with ICE in three main ways. ICE requests sheriffs to:
Rent bed space in jails that Sheriffs operate to ICE.
Hold people for an additional 48 hours so that ICE can pick them up.
Sign a 287g - a document which allows local law enforcement to have the authority of ICE agents and enforce civil warrants that pop up in NCIC (the police database).
We have a simple message to our sheriff: This is a moment that demands moral clarity. They do not have to become a force multiplier for ICE. When sheriffs take on the responsibility of federal immigration authorities, it undermines their core mission, stretches already limited resources, and most importantly, causes real harm.
Join our conversation and represent yourself or your coalition. Your moral voice is of value.
This Movement Call is co-sponsored by: Catholics Vote Common Good, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), Jews for a Secular Democracy, Faithful America, Boots On The Ground Midwest, Sojourners, Coalition on Human Needs, Voto Latino
